Hiring is perfect for occasional jobs. But if you're hiring the same type of access equipment month after month, buying a refurbished machine can quickly work out cheaper.
When hiring makes sense
- You need a machine for a one-off job or a few days a year
- You need lots of different machine types
- You have nowhere to store a machine between jobs
When buying makes sense
- You hire the same kind of machine regularly
- You want it available on short notice, without booking
- You have secure storage and somewhere to charge it
- You want an asset you can sell on later
A simple way to compare
- Add up what you spent on hire for that type of machine over the last 12 months, including delivery and collection.
- Compare it with the purchase price of a suitable refurbished machine.
- Add the yearly cost of ownership: LOLER examinations, servicing, insurance and storage.
If a year of hire costs more than the machine plus a year of running costs, buying is usually the better choice.
