Buying a Used Scissor Lift: 8 Things to Check Before You Pay

A good used scissor lift can cost a fraction of a new one and work for years. A bad one can cost you a job. Whether you buy from us or anyone else, here are the eight things we'd check before handing over any money.

1. A current LOLER thorough examination

Under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), equipment used to lift people must have a thorough examination at least every six months. Ask for the certificate, check the date, and make sure the serial number on it matches the machine. Every machine we sell comes with a LOLER certificate.

2. Hours on the clock

Hours tell you more than the year of manufacture. A 2014 machine with low hours that has been looked after can be a better buy than a newer one that has worked hard every day. Ask for the hour reading and photos of the meter.

3. Batteries (electric models)

Batteries are one of the most expensive parts to replace. Ask how old they are, whether they hold charge through a full working day, and check the charger works.

4. Hydraulics

Look for oil on the cylinders, hoses and under the machine. Raise the platform to full height and leave it for a few minutes – it should not creep down.

5. Scissor pins and arms

Check the scissor stack for cracks, bent arms or worn pins. Excessive play or sway at height is a warning sign.

6. Controls and safety systems

Test the platform and ground controls, emergency stop, emergency lowering, tilt alarm and pothole protection. Everything should work first time.

7. Tyres and wheels

Non-marking tyres matter if the machine will work indoors. Check for chunks missing, flat spots and wheel motor leaks.

8. Service history and warranty

A fully serviced machine with a warranty gives you someone to call if something goes wrong. Ask exactly what the warranty covers and for how long.
