Electric vs Diesel Scissor Lifts: Which Should You Buy?

Most scissor lifts are either battery-electric or diesel-powered. The right choice depends on where you'll use the machine and what ground it will work on.

Electric scissor lifts

  • Zero emissions – suitable for indoor work in warehouses, shops and offices.
  • Quiet – ideal for occupied buildings and night work.
  • Compact – narrow models fit through standard doorways and into lifts.
  • Non-marking tyres – protect finished floors.
  • Lower running costs – no fuel, fewer engine parts to service.

The trade-off: they're designed mainly for firm, level surfaces, and battery condition matters a lot on a used machine.

Diesel (rough-terrain) scissor lifts

  • Built for outdoor sites – larger tyres and more ground clearance.
  • Bigger platforms and capacities – often with deck extensions.
  • No charging – refuel and keep working.

The trade-off: noise and exhaust mean they're not suitable for most indoor work, and engines need regular servicing.

Quick guide

  • Indoors or on concrete slabs → electric
  • Building sites, gravel or uneven ground → diesel rough-terrain
  • A mix of both → consider a hybrid or an outdoor-rated electric model
