Indoor vs Outdoor Scissor Lifts: Understanding Wind Ratings

Many compact electric scissor lifts are rated for indoor use only. Using one outside – even on a calm-looking day – can be dangerous. Here's how wind ratings work.

What is a wind rating?

Every MEWP has a maximum wind speed it's designed to be used in, set by the manufacturer. You'll find it on the machine's data plate and in the operator's manual.

  • Indoor-rated machines are designed for use where there is no wind at all.
  • Outdoor-rated machines can be used outside up to the stated wind speed – commonly 12.5 m/s (about 28 mph) for many models.

Why wind matters more at height

Wind is stronger the higher you go, and gusts can be much stronger than the average speed. Large objects on the platform – like sheets of board or signs – catch the wind and add even more force.

Staying safe outdoors

  • Check the machine's rating before taking it outside.
  • Check the forecast, including gusts, before starting work.
  • Use an anemometer at platform height if conditions are borderline.
  • Stop work and lower the platform if the wind exceeds the rating.
  • Avoid carrying large flat materials on the platform in windy conditions.
