IPAF MEWP Categories Explained: 1a, 1b, 3a and 3b

If you've looked at operator training, you'll have seen categories like 3a and 3b. They come from the way MEWPs are classified by group and type, and they're used by IPAF for operator training.

Groups: vertical or outreach

  • Group A – the platform moves vertically and stays within the machine's tipping lines. Scissor lifts and personnel lifts are Group A.
  • Group B – the platform can reach out beyond the tipping lines. Boom lifts and cherry pickers are Group B.

Types: how the machine travels

  • Type 1 – can only be moved in the stowed position (for example, trailer-mounted or push-around).
  • Type 3 – can be driven while the platform is raised, controlled from the platform.

Putting it together

  • 1a (static vertical) – e.g. push-around vertical lifts
  • 1b (static boom) – e.g. trailer-mounted and vehicle-mounted booms
  • 3a (mobile vertical) – e.g. self-propelled scissor lifts
  • 3b (mobile boom) – e.g. self-propelled articulated and telescopic booms

Why it matters

Operators should be trained on the category of machine they use. When buying a machine, check which category it falls into so your team has the right training in place.
